In 1796 - 89 years before Cheadle Golf Club was founded - John Watts opened a small drapery store on Deansgate in Manchester. By 1835 both the wholesale and retail parts of the business had expanded enormously. John decided to concentrate on the wholesale side and sold the Deansgate store to three of his employees, Thomas Kendal, James Milne and Adam Faulkner. Following the death of Adam Faulkner, the store came to be known as Kendal Milne and, later still, simply Kendals. The store has since become part of the House of Fraser.
James Milne died in 1862 but members of his family continued to be involved in running the business. In the 1880s Queen Victoria's love of things Scottish sparked off a growth in interest in golf. In 1880 there were only 12 golf courses in the whole of England, but by 1887 this number had grown to 50. The Milne family contributed to this growth by helping to found Cheadle Golf Club in 1885. Five members of the Milne family were Club Captains between 1893 and 1912 and Miss H L Milne was Lady Captain in 1900.
Cheadle Golf Club is proud to acknowledge its association with the Milne family and to congratulate House of Fraser on the 175th anniversary of the formation of the partnership that produced the largest and most prestigious department store in the north of England. Cheadle Golf Club is also delighted to congratulate Hesketh Golf Club on the 125th anniversary of its foundation.
As part of their anniversary celebrations Cheadle and Hesketh Golf Clubs will compete for the Kendal's Trophy. This trophy has been generously donated by House of Fraser in recognition of the historical association between the store and Cheadle Golf Club.
