What a difference a day makes

On Saturday 18th February the Men’s Competition unfortunately had to be called off part way through with the temporary greens unplayable.

As you know the Greens Committee are trying to keep the course open whenever they can (see the Greens Chairman post dated 12th January). Although the course was not suitable for competition the course was not closed and it was not long before some members braved the conditions and played some golf.

In total contrast there was not a cloud in the sky for the Pro’s Sunday roll up the following day. What a difference a day makes.

What is a good score?

On Saturday 11th February the Men played 6-6-6 Competition with a difference. Firstly it was a 4 ball. Originally the thought was to have 2 scores count on holes 1-6, 3 scores count on holes 7-12 and all 4 scores count on holes 13- 18. Eventually it was decided to play more of a 9-9 Competition with 2 scores counting on holes 1-9 and 3 scores counting on holes 10-18.

HAVING NEVER PLAYED THIS FORMAT BEFORE, THE QUESTION WAS WHAT WOULD BE A GOOD SCORE?

Well all pars would be 90 points, but Congratulations go to our winners by 12 clear shots who were David Booth, Brian Combe, Iain Melville & Reg Skinner with 115 points.

Captain’s ‘Swansong’ 25th March

It’s getting to the stage that I have to recognise that it will not be very long before I hand over the reins to the current Vice Captain, Don Milligan.

Just like last year’s Captain, Ian Haig, I will be holding a Captain’s ‘Swansong’ betterball competition as a way of thanking our Professional for all the hard work he has put in during my year. He really has done a fantastic job in so many areas around the Club and he is to be particularly thanked for often completing the Men’s Competition Results on a Saturday

Details will be shortly going up on the noticeboard. The format will be very much the same as for last year with a shotgun ‘tee off’ at 10.30 a.m. on Sunday 25th March. There will be many spot prizes and if feel that you want you want to show your own particular support to the Professional you will again have the opportunity to sponsor one of the spot prizes (please see Anthony directly about this). The competition will be open to all categories of Membership and also non-Members.

I’d like to see as many Members playing as possible in my last Competition as Captain. It would also be fantastic to get at least as many people involved as last year and it is a great way of thanking the Professional for all his effort.

I look forward to seeing you playing in the Competition. Let’s have a great day!

Captain wins again

Another win for the Captain playing with Stuart Smith in the 6th Winter Betterball competition on Saturday 4th February. This is his 3rd win in his year as Captain. Playing in the morning the weather was on his side; the afternoon players had a harder time in snow showers

Mr. Vice Captain Elect

As is a tradition in the Club, following the breakfast competition on the last Sunday in January the announcement was made of the next Mr. Vice Captain.

Congratulations got to John Sandford who will be Don Milligan’s Mr. Vice Captain in Don’s year as Mr. Captain.

John Sandford Mr. Vice Captain elect

John has worked tirelessly for the Club for many years, he is full of energy and it is well deserved that he will be becoming Captain in 2013. It is largely due to John’s efforts as Treasurer that the Club remains in a healthy financial position in these times of economic downturn. It is also fantastic news for the Club that whilst John is Mr. Captain, his wife Judith will also be Lady Captain.

I know you will join me on congratulating John in his appointment and wishing him and Judith well for their year together in high office
